In 1935, Brussels hosted the World’s Fair. The Heysel Plateau and the village of Laeken were completely redeveloped, showcasing Art Deco and modernist styles. From major infrastructure projects like the Palais des Expositions and Brugmann Hospital to single-family residences and workers’ houses, these buildings showcase all the attributes of interwar architecture. Between the major traffic arteries, the district nevertheless retains its provincial character.
