In working-class neighborhoods, we move away from the art nouveau as symbol of success for the bourgeoisie and turn towards apartment buildings, shops, schools, cafes, cinemas…
Several architects (because yes, it’s not just Victor Horta) have tried it. They were keen to revalorize the know-how of craftsmen: carpenters, goldsmiths, stonemasons, stained glass workers, etc.
There remain relatively few vestiges of this popular art nouveau, survivors of the major works and the real estate pressure in the city center. We can still (re)discover them in the middle of shops, modern homes… Far from total art nouveau residences, they are the witness of a philosophy: innovative architecture and an awareness of beauty and art for the less fortunate.
